Heritage
The Zora Legacy
1909 — Born in Belgium
Zachary “Zora” Arkus-Duntov is born on Christmas Day in Brussels, Belgium to a Russian-Jewish family. His early fascination with engines and speed would eventually reshape the American sports car forever.
1930s — The Ardun Heads
While working in Europe, Zora and his brother Yura develop the Ardun overhead-valve cylinder head conversion for Ford flathead V8 engines. The “Ardun” name comes from combining “Ar” from Arkus and “Dun” from Duntov. These heads are still sought after by hot-rodders today.
1953 — Zora Joins GM
After seeing the first Corvette prototype at the Motorama show in New York, Zora writes a now-famous letter to Chevrolet chief engineer Ed Cole and is hired on the spot. He immediately begins pushing for the Corvette to become a true performance machine rather than a styled cruiser with an anemic inline-six.
1955 — The V8 Corvette
Zora champions the small-block V8 for the Corvette, replacing the original Blue Flame six-cylinder. This single decision saves the Corvette from cancellation and transforms it into a legitimate sports car. The V8 Corvette identity that would define generations begins here.
1956 — Daytona Beach Speed Record
Zora personally drives a modified Corvette to 150 mph on Daytona Beach, setting a new production car speed record. He proves to GM management — and the world — that the Corvette can compete with the best from Europe. This run secures the Corvette’s future as a performance car.
1957 — Sebring & Rochester Fuel Injection
Zora helps develop the Rochester mechanical fuel injection system for the Corvette, making it the first production fuel-injected American car. A Corvette finishes first in class and twelfth overall at the grueling 12 Hours of Sebring, proving the Corvette on the international racing stage.
1963 — The Sting Ray
The C2 Corvette Sting Ray debuts with independent rear suspension — a feature Zora fought for relentlessly against internal resistance. The split-window coupe designed by Larry Shinoda and Bill Mitchell becomes one of the most iconic Corvettes ever built. Zora also develops the CERV I and CERV II experimental mid-engine prototypes, planting the seed for a mid-engine Corvette decades before it became reality.
1975 — Zora Retires from GM
After more than two decades of shaping the Corvette into America’s sports car, Zora Arkus-Duntov retires from General Motors. He is universally recognized as the Father of the Corvette. His relentless pursuit of performance over style, function over compromise, defines the Corvette philosophy to this day.
1996 — National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame
Zora Arkus-Duntov is inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He remains a towering figure in Corvette history and automotive engineering.
2005 — C6 Corvette
The C6 Corvette launches with exposed headlamps and the legendary LS2 V8. The C6 Z06 with the 7.0-liter LS7 and the supercharged C6 ZR1 push Corvette performance into genuine supercar territory — exactly what Zora always envisioned. WAMS provides C6 Corvette BCM programming and electronics services to this day.
2014 — C7 Corvette Stingray
The C7 revives the Stingray name with the direct-injected LT1 V8. The C7 Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1 deliver supercar-level performance at an American price. WAMS offers C7 Corvette cluster upgrades to the 2019 Track/GTLM display and Apple CarPlay steering wheel control kits.
2020 — C8 Mid-Engine Corvette
The C8 Corvette finally moves the engine behind the driver — the exact layout Zora Arkus-Duntov prototyped with the CERV II in the 1960s. His dream, realized fifty years later. The C8 Stingray, Z06 with the flat-plane crank LT6, E-Ray hybrid, twin-turbo ZR1, ZR1X, Grand Sport and Grand Sport X with the naturally-aspirated LS6 represent the absolute pinnacle of Corvette engineering. WAMS provides C8 Corvette wireless CarPlay upgrades, OEM exhaust tips, and transmission service kits.
Today — The Legacy Lives On
Zora Arkus-Duntov passed away in 1996, but his spirit lives in every Corvette that rolls off the line in Bowling Green. From the rumble of a C6 LS3 to the scream of a C8 Z06’s flat-plane crank LT6 and the LS6-powered Grand Sport, the Corvette remains the sports car Zora fought to create. And every Corvette upgrade WAMS delivers carries that same commitment to engineering excellence.
